Given my background in music and my interest in aesthetics, I'm increasingly thinking about the role that beauty plays in personal and social wellbeing. That was the topic of a marvelous conference this weekend at Princeton put on by Margarita Mooney Suarez and the SCALA Foundation. I'm grateful for the invitation to participate and for the valuable insights I gleaned from the fellow panelists there.
Baylor in Washington in partnership with Braver Angels staged a terrific debate on Baylor's campus on September 30th on "Defunding the Police." Many thanks to the courageous students who offered speeches for and against the proposed resolution. You truly exemplified civil and charitable discourse.
Thank you Cornel West, Andrew Sullivan, and Teresa Bejan for a fun and insightful panel on civility. And here's a plug for Teresa's fine book, Mere Civility. I had the opportunity to moderate a powerful panel on Freedom of Speech on February 10th with Thomas Chatterton Williams, Jonathan Rauch, Kristina Arriaga, and David French. We could not have anticipated the energy and depth of the conversation. Video below. Many thanks to the panelists, to our two co-sponsors, and to the Baylor in Washington team (Mollie Moore, Matt Anderson, and Nate Mills) for making this such a success. I don't often write about classical music -- the subject of my conservatory days -- but sometimes I do.
Music and Metaphor We did a great event on (virtual) Capitol Hill this afternoon. I'm grateful for the sponsorship of the Faith & Law Society and for the generous contributions of the participants: Justin Giboney, R.J. Snell, and Matt Anderson.
